FICA takes legal action against BCB
June 09, 2012 05:55 GMT
The continued failure of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchises to clear the dues of players who took part in the Twenty20 league could hurt the board chief Mustafa Kamal's ambitions of becoming the next ICC president.
Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA) has initiated legal proceedings against the BCB and BPL franchises for their failure to pay the players. "The integrity of people involved in the leadership of Bangladesh cricket is spiralling downwards uncontrollably. We have had continued assurances from Mustafa Kamal - a man touted as the next ICC president - but the continued non-payment does not reflect him in a particularly good light," Tim May, the FICA chief, said.
After failing to make payments despite getting ample time since the BPL concluded in February, the organisation has instructed lawyers in Dhaka to file a claim against the BCB and franchises. "It was stipulated by contract how much the players would be paid and the date by which they would receive the payment. It was also stipulated that, if the franchises couldn't pay, then the BCB would act as guarantors and would make the payments," May was quoted as saying by a website.
"We have been waiting for four months. Deadlines have come and gone and all we have had is a litany of excuses. It has come to the stage where all avenues of dialogue have dried up and the BCB have stopped responding to FICA," he added.
May termed the BCB's behaviour as "amateurish". "If we had a relationship based on trust we could understand their issues and agree a timeline for payments, as we did with the Sri Lanka board when they had some cash flow difficulties. But they have behaved in an amateurish manner and we have no confidence in them or their integrity."
Top international stars such as Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Stuart MacGill and Peter Trego played in the event.
May said FICA will advice the players to not get involved in future unless they are either paid, or receive bank guarantees.

Ashraful News

Ashraful.

Dhaka: Former captain Mohammad Ashraful lost his annual deal on Sunday as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cut their list of contracted players from 18 to 15.

Ashraful, who was not involved in last month's 50-over Asia Cup campaign, Syed Rasel, Junaid Siddique, Raqibul Hasan, Shahadat Hossain, Naeem Islam and Suhrawadi Shuvo were omitted from the new list announced by the BCB.

Of the seven players missing out, Shahadat was the only one who played in the Asia Cup.

All-rounder Nasir Hossain, batsmen Nazimuddin and Shuvagata Hom and left-arm spinner Elias Sunny are the fresh faces to receive anuual contracts.

Pakistan beat Bangladesh by two runs in the Asia Cup final in Dhaka on March 22.

How to deal with and more readily understand complex data is explored in this month’s newsletter.  The front page article looks at Principal Component Analysis (PCA), providing some background information and how and where it might be used to analyse complex data sets.  The idea is to reduce large numbers of variables into a small number of meaningful dimensions.  The case study continues the theme with an example of how we used PCA in a segmentation analysis to identify types of family groups and individuals based on their financial behaviour.  A complex data set from a 140 page questionnaire with nearly 800 variables was supplied.  The case study outlines the techniques used to create a robust solution for the client including factor analysis and cluster analysis.  This month we introduce one of our new staff members, Alethea Rea from New Zealand.

There is so much data collected and stored today, but is this data good data?  Can you be sure that the data you have is the right amount from the right sources to give you the accuracy required to deliver meaningful results?  In this newsletter, Dr John Henstridge explores the idea that planning the data is the first step in any analysis and discusses how statisticians are equipped with the knowledge and tools required to provide assurance in the investment of the data collected.  One of these methodologies is ‘Experimental Design’ which aims to ensure that a data design is appropriately balanced to maximise the efficiency of any analysis.  Dr Kathy Haskard, who recently joined Data Analysis Australia as an experienced Senior Consultant Statistician outlines the process and many benefits of using an ‘Experimental Design’ in the Analytical Ideas Article.  She cleverly uses the AFL football draw as a way of explaining how and why it is used.  Kathy is profiled in this month’s newsletter having had a wide and varied career as a statistician.

Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag

Born: 20 October 1978, Delhi
Major Teams: Delhi, India.
Known As: Virender Shewag
Batting Style: Right Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Off Break

Profile:

A hard hitting batsman and a more than useful off spinner, Virender Shewag made a disastrous debut against Pakistan at Mohali in the Pepsi Cup. After having got out for a single he was hammered for 35 runs in the three overs that he bowled. He was then short listed among the 19 probables for the 1999 World Cup in England but did not make the final squad. Shewag has been a mainstay in the Delhi Ranji Trophy team since the 1998-99 season. A powerful hitter of the ball, he aggregated 745 runs during the 1998-99 Ranji Trophy season with three centuries and followed it up with 674 runs in the 1999-2000 edition of the competition.
Shewag made a strong comeback to the Indian team during the Australia tour of India in 2000-01. In the first one-dayer at Bangalore, Shewag helped himself to a quick half century before scalping three crucial wickets to play a leading role in India's victory. Man of the match in the first one-dayer, Shewag was forced to miss the rest of the series with a fractured finger. But the last has not been heard of this stout hearted Delhi all rounder.

Sehwag, fastest triple hundred ..............
Sehwag's Double Century...........

NEW DELHI: The starry-minded not to mention starry eyed would say swashbuckler Sehwag once again displayed a perfect
sense of timing. Thursday was akha teej , the day you can do anything without consulting astrologers. Not just any akha teej ,
but apparently the most auspicious one in 70 years. And so,shaadi manaane ko Sehwag chala . But everything associated
with Sehwag just has to be tempestous. And so, a downpour duly engulfed Delhi, raising fears that the season's most awaited
match-up might be a washout. This day, though, there was going to be no raining on the Nawab of Najafgarh's parade.
Staff at 9 Ashoka Road Arun Jaitley's residence and the wedding's venue scurried around frantically. Fans of the pedestal kind
were pressed into service; the maroon satin and golden tissue  curtains dried and hung up again. Picture-perfection was restored,
the stage set for Jea Band from Red Fort to make a grand entry at about 9 p m, huffing and puffing away to the sonorous strains of Bolo
Tara Ra Ra .The pandal at 9, Ashoka Road, Arun Jaitley’s residence and the venue of Sehwag’s wedding. More photos But wait a minute,
where was the munda himself? Logon dhoondo dhoondo might well have been played at this juncture, except that the band had
fallen silent. No, Sehwag hadn't been run out, just left behind somewhere in the course of switching over from the mandatory
mare to a car. The waiting began. In between, BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya walked in and wished the couple an unbeaten century partnership.
Taaliyan, taaliyan . But still no sign of the groom. The band held its peace, only bursting into Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai when local BJP leader
Vijay Goel marched in. Meanwhile, the guests gave the decor a dekko . Nothing too fancy: lights on trees, a tastefully decorated stage
with golden drapes behind the thrones. The chairs were golden too, with maroon cushions, flanked by two dull gold pillars bedecked with flowers,
prominently orchids, carnations, roses and birds of paradise, reportedly brought in from ThailandContrary to reports of five-star spreads, the food was mostly shuddh shakahari bharatiya bhojan with nary a foie gras or caviar on bline in sight, provided by Dass Caterers of
R K Puram, who'd also catered the wedding of the bride's elder sister. The look-around was interrupted by a blast of music.
Pretty Woman the Main Hoon Na version blared from the dance floor set up in the lawn. Shortly thereafter, at around 10 pm,
Viru entered in a white Merc, wearing a colour-coordinated cream churidar kurta . He charged straight for the dressing-room.
A quick changeover into a brown sherwani later, he was out on the ground, ready to begin his new innings. Guests with a
sense of humour remarked upon the absence of a helmet. And the ceremonies commenced.
All the hustle and bustle at night was a far cry from the subdued atmosphere at Sehwag's house in Najafgarh earlier in the day.
Curtains were tightly drawn, doors and windows bolted, and umpteen policemen patrolled the house on all sides.
There was a brief dance routine by cousins and friends. The moment the music started, curious neighbours thronged
the entrance and climbed onto the rooftops for a glimpse. A family visit to the local temple evoked a similiar response,
with enthusiastic onlookers scaling the walls and cheering and clapping wildly. Viru didn't have a bat to raise in acknowledgment,
but he did smile and wave, all the while cutting a dashing figure in grey sherwani and red bandhni turban.

3.Sachin tendulkar
Profile: Sachin Tendulkar
By popular vote, the greatest batsman in the world today, Sachin Tendulkar has the cricketing world at his feet. The adulation he commands world over is unsurpassed, perhaps since the days of Don Bradman, to whom of course he has been compared, by no less than the great man himself. While he may not end with a Test career average of 99.94, there is little doubt that based on his vigorous style of batsmanship and his insatiable appetite for runs and big scores, he is the most complete batsman since Vivian Richards. In many ways though he has surpassed even that outstanding West Indian batsman.

When Tendulkar is on song, there is no more majestic sight in the cricketing world. The spectators at the stadium are on their feet cheering while all over the world, TV audiences are glued to the screen. He has scored heavily on all kinds of wickets the world over, in conditions which lesser mortals have not been able to master and against bowlers whom other batsmen have found it difficult to score off. Immensely gifted and blessed with an impeccable technique, Tendulkar's batting is a dream, combining timing, elegance and power. Mentally very strong, Tendulkar is best when confronted by a challenge - as he showed when mowing down Shane Warne in India in 1998. Captain during two short stints, Tendulkar has made it clear that he would prefer to concentrate on his batting and indeed, he seems to be getting better with every passing year. Scoring two double centuries in successive seasons and being the first to cross the 10,000 run barrier in ODIs is clear proof of this. The best thing from the fans' point of view - if not the bowler's - is that the entertainment, courtesy Tendulkar, is still at the intermission stage. Long may
`The King' continue to regale his willing subjects!

While his batting ranks him among the best in the world, he is also a part-time bowler and has played a crucial role as a leg spinner or a medium pace bowler who tends to break partnerships. He has more than a hundred wickets in ODIs and 35 in tests, though his bowling averages are above 40. He continues to perform well under the massive weight of expectation of hundreds of millions of cricket followers, in India and around the world, and most recently was named Player Of The Tournament in the 2003 Cricket World Cup.Incidentally, Sachin is the first batsman to be declared run out by third umpire in 1992 in South Africa.
